How does Lanso D 30mg Capsule work?

Lanso D 30mg Capsule works by blocking the action of the enzyme known as the gastric proton pump responsible for the production of acid. This reduces the amount of acid produced, heals the ulcers, and prevents the formation of new ulcers.

Indication of Lanso D 30mg Capsule

• Acidity occurs when the protective mucous layer of the stomach is eroded, leading to complications such as acidity, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), heartburn, peptic ulcers, and corrosive esophagitis.
• GERD is characterized by frequent backflow of stomach acid into the food pipe (esophagus), causing irritation and heartburn. Factors contributing to GERD include chocolate, caffeine-containing foods, spicy and fried foods, pregnancy or obesity, lying down after meals, and alcohol or smoking.
• Corrosive esophagitis occurs when the esophagus is damaged by harmful substances. This can result in ulcers, inflammation, or scarring. Causes of corrosive esophagitis include swallowing strong chemicals like dishwashing liquid, detergents, and drain cleaners, radiation therapy, and certain medications such as painkillers and drugs for osteoporosis.

Lanso D 30mg Capsule relieves symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. This capsule is not recommended for children below 12 years of age. 

Pharmacology

Dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsule is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by inhibiting the (H+/K+)-ATPase in the gastric parietal cell, leading to a suppression of gastric acid output. It specifically targets the final step of acid generation by acting on the proton pump.

Dexlansoprazole is the R-enantiomer of lansoprazole, which is a racemic mixture of the R- and S-enantiomers. The recommended adult dosage for healing erosive esophagitis is 60 mg taken orally once daily for up to 8 weeks. For maintaining the healing of erosive esophagitis or treating heartburn associated with symptomatic non-erosive GERD, the recommended dosage is 30 mg taken orally once daily for up to 6 months or 4 weeks, respectively.
• For patients with mild hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh A), no dose adjustment is necessary. For those with moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh B), the dosage should not exceed 30 mg per day. Lanso D 30mg Capsule is not recommended for patients with severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C).

The safety and efficacy of Lanso D 30mg Capsules in children below 12 years of age have not been established. For children aged 12 years and above, the recommended dosages for healing erosive esophagitis and treating symptomatic non-erosive GERD are the same as for adults.

To take Lanso D 30mg Capsule, swallow it whole with water. Do not crush or chew the capsule. It is advised to take the medication 1 hour before a meal, preferably in the morning.

• The use of dexlansoprazole during pregnancy has not been extensively studied, but observational studies with lansoprazole, the racemic mixture of which dexlansoprazole is the R-enantiomer, did not show an association with adverse pregnancy-related outcomes. Animal studies with lansoprazole showed reductions in offspring femur weight, length, crown-rump length, and growth plate thickness, along with reduced body weight gain. Pregnant women should be advised of the potential risk to the fetus.
• The presence of dexlansoprazole in human milk and its effects on breastfed infants or milk production is not known. However, lansoprazole and its metabolites have been found in rat milk. The decision to breastfeed should consider the developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding, along with the mother's clinical need for therapy and the potential adverse effects on the breastfed child from both the therapy and the underlying maternal condition.
